Callahan Branch Library Book Club Goes to Cross Creek
by Alice Pehlke
Callahan Branch Library Book Club members don’t just sit around and read! They were inspired by a favorite book, Cross Creek, and were compelled to check out the location. On May 26th, five members traveled to author Marjorie Kinnan-Rawlings’s home and grounds. Miss Rawlings wrote of her life in the Florida backwoods during the 1930’s and 40’s. She is best known for the Pulitzer prize winning novel, The Yearling. Her home and farm are kept as they were while she lived there. The site is owned and operated by the Florida State Park system. After a delightful informative tour, the group enjoyed lunch at the nearby “Yearling” restaurant. A stop at a fruit stand on the way home was a hit. They have decided more field trips are a must. The club meets at the Callahan Branch Library on the 4th Thursday of the month from 10:30am-11:30am. All are welcome. For July, Book Club members are reading books set in China, and memoirs are the genre set for August. Who knows where those books may lead them?
